Abstract

Today, agriculture is at a critical juncture. Significant increases in crop productivity over the last century have contributed to feeding the world's fast expanding population. Technological advancements, better crop varieties, chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and mechanization all contributed significantly to these gains. But there have also been unforeseen repercussions from this advancement. Water scarcity, soil degradation, diminishing biodiversity, and greenhouse gas emissions are becoming more widely acknowledged as significant issues related to traditional agricultural methods. Scientists, farmers, and policymakers are reevaluating how to make agricultural systems more sustainable without sacrificing productivity because of these worries.
