Abstract

Cinnamomum tamala is a useful medium-sized medicinal and aromatic tree for the restoration of degraded land. Seed germination in this species is a critical phenomenon, because seeds are desiccation-sensitive, and prolonged storage is known to reduce germination. Seeds were tested for germination behavior under different conditions (i.e., open environment, shade house, and mist chamber). Under mist chamber conditions, seeds germinated up to 80%, and the Mean Emergence Time (MET) was also better under this condition. The variations in total seed germination (%) and MET were significant in open environment, shade house, and mist chamber conditions (LSDSin P ˂ 0.01). Removal of seed pulp and sowing of the seeds within one week after harvesting is useful for satisfactory germination
