Gathering and safeguarding data

The information gathered from both registered and unregistered readers of this publication is consistent with how peer-reviewed journals normally operate. It contains data that facilitates communication for the editorial process, informs readers about content authorship and editing, allows for the collection of aggregated reader behavior data, and tracks the social and geopolitical components of scholarly communication.  The editorial board of this publication uses the data to direct its efforts in publishing and enhancing this publication. With the required exclusions, including article analytics, data that will help build this publishing platform may be shared in aggregated and anonymized form with its developer, Public Knowledge Project. This journal and PKP promise not to sell the data or use it for reasons other than those listed below. The human subject data used in the research reported here is the responsibility of the authors who have published in this publication.

In particular, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) provision for "data subject rights"—which include (a) breach notification; (b) right of access; (c) right to be forgotten; (d) data portability; and (e) privacy by design—requires those involved in editing this journal to adhere to industry standards for data privacy. In addition, the GDPR recognizes "the public interest in the availability of the data," which is especially important for people who are responsible for upholding the public record of scientific publications as accurately as possible.
